Forests and Biodiversity

Of the 30 million or more species on Earth, the overwhelming majority live in tropical forests. Efforts are underway to set up protected areas for conserving this biodiversity. Currently, 6 percent of the world's land area is either strictly or partially protected. North and Central America have set aside the highest percentage of land in parts and reserves -- almost 12 percent. The former Soviet Union has set aside the least, just over 1 percent.
