In 1992, 158 nations signed the Convention on Biological Diversity, reflecting the scientific consensus and popular concern over biodiversity loss. The concerns range from preserving genetic resources that are vital for long-term sustainability of agriculture and the discovery of new medicines and crops, to the protection of the biological resources that rural people depend upon for their livelihoods.
