Deforestation remains one of the pressing global natural resource problems facing humankind. Tropical forests, in particular, continue to disappear at a staggering rate in the face of growing populations and the demand for economic goods. Over the past decade, 154 million hectares of tropical forests, equivalent to almost three times the land area of France, have been cleared.
