Forest area is shrinking between one-half and one percent per year. In industrialized countries the percentage of primary "ancient" forests still remaining intact varies: 1 percent in Western Europe's forests, 13 percent in the Northwest U.S., 5 to 20 percent in Australia, 25 percent in New Zealand, and 40 percent in British Columbia. Few of the old-growth forests in temperate regions are fully protected.
