Forests and Biodiversity

Habitat loss is considered by scientists to be the biggest current threat to biodiversity and the loss of species. Many scientists warn that the world is on the verge of a major species extinction, rivaling the disappearance of dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Unlike previous episodes of species extinction which were caused by geological, climatic, or other natural phenomena, this one is due to human overuse and misuse of habitats.
