governmental organizations which are involved in protecting forests / sensitizing the people about the value –

utility – protection of the forest

General Issue: Conservation of ecosystems

Issue-Topic: Cleaning of forest recreational areas

Activities - Results:

Cleaning from litter and flammable material of recreational areas such as Karaouli, Penteli-Agios Petros, and Mola

Pentelis areas in order to minimise forest fire incidences.

Tree planting (12/90) at Marousi and Parnitha.

Tree planting at Penteli (1996) and Chasia in collaboration with the Greek and Cypriot ministries of Agriculture.

Presentation to the Panteion University of the conclusions of a research programme called VOLMED HELLAS.

Participation in the ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONALE FORETS MEDITERRANEENNEC that aims at protecting the

Mediterranean forests.

Forest protection- prevention of fires in Penteli, Imitos mounts and installation of a mobile prevention station in each

mount (4 people per guard).

Participation in the Parliament's deliberations including the expression of opinion on fire-protection and the

submission of proposals (9/91).

Participation in VOLMET programme undertaken by the Panteion University. It covers all Mediterranean countries and

the volunteering groups dealing with all subjects.

Organisation of a protest at the East Parnitha against the construction of Ippocratios Politia.

Interventions made to the Ministry of the Environment and the media in order to prevent the building activities at

7.500 acres in the area (1991)

Organisation of an event against the operation of Public Electricity Company's high voltage electricity towers at

Avlona, that put the forest into danger.

celebrations for the International Forestry Day each year .

Communication with volunteering groups with the purpose of co-operating on fire protection issues.

Future Activities:

Submitting jointly with E.DA.SA a common programme on environmental education and the Society of the friends of the

forest on the bellow subjects:

1) Campaign of Information – sensitization of the public

2) Implementation of a study for the causes of forest fires and the most productive way for fighting against the above

3) Participation in the establishment and preservation of the right substructure for the prevention and the limitation of

the forest fires

4) Equipment of the necessary communication means for the in time notice of the authorities and of transportation and

immediate intervention means

5) Training specialized professionals on Telecommunication – fire extinction knowledge

6) Implementation of studies relevant to the use of technical means and methods of fire prevention
