II. Activities

General Issue: Information - Sensitisation of the public

The activity took place in 1997 Range: Regional

Activities - Results:

A presentation of the management plan for the nesting areas of the sea turtles was carried out in Crete. The

audience included hoteliers, tourist agents and local authorities in the island of Crete.

Activities - Results:

Carrying out of education programmes at areas such as Zakinthos, Crete and Peloponisos where the biggest

concentration of sea turtle nests has been observed.

Information analysis with the view of submitting proposals regarding the elaboration of management plans for the

protection of sea turtles and their biotopes.

Protection of the nests from volunteers and scientists so that the negative impacts stemming from the presence of

tourists and hunting is minimised.

Transportation of nests into natural incubators in cases where they are endangered by human activities or extreme

weather conditions.

Activities - Results:

Reduction of artificial lighting at night, reduction of car mobility, clearing of beaches form litter.

Attempts have been made to declare Laganas bay as a national sea part

Direct information of tourists since 1996 at the nesting beaches through lectures, screening of transparencies at

hotels as well as through the local and national media.

Presentations made at schools. Creation of mobile programmes. Organisation of excursions and visiting schools.

Activities - Results:

Operation of sea turtle network throughout Greece. Hospitalisation of injured sea turtles.

Creation of a Sea Turtle Rescue Centre in Glyfada in collaboration with Glyfada municipality

Participation in international conferences, organisation of painting exhibitions for kids in the Cultural Centre of Piraeus

and Athens municipalities.

Co-operation with the Ministry of the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works and UNEP / Submission of a

proposal for the purchase of land in Zante. The peace of land was finally purchased by WWF Greece.

Activities - Results:

Cancellation of the illegal opening up of a new road in Giannitsena area of Kyparrisia (July '97) in collaboration with

local residents. Thus, indigenous plants and animals were protected.

Future Activities:

Submitting the organization in the existing Institution of the Marine park of Zakinthos. Implementation of management

plans for Crete and Peloponniso. Completing the Preservation center in Glifada and using the existing area for

environmental education courses.
