II. Activities

General Issue: Biodiversity protection

Issue-Topic: Endangered sea species

From: 1992 To: 1998 Range: National

Activities - Results:

Action taken in Zante involving 'Sirios' ship. Occupation of the Prefecure offices demanding the protection of sea turtle

biotopes (1992).

Action taken in collaboration with the Ecological Movement of Zante and the Society for the Protection of Sea Turtles

as well as with local agencies in order that Marathonisi area in Laganas hulf is protected (1993).

Co-ordination of common proposals submitted by WWF, the Society for the Protection of Sea Turtles, the Ecological

Movement of Zante and local agencies in order to establish a Sea Park in Lganas (1993).

Action taken in Marathonisi to protect it from building activities (1993) / Action taken in front of a Ministry of the

Environment's builiding against the tolerance that it is revealed by the Ministry towards ellegal building activities.

Activities - Results:

Action taken for the protection of North Sporades cluster of islands from the passing of oil tankers. Submission of a

proposal to the Ministry of Merchant Shipping and the Ministry of the Envrionment, Physical Planning and Public

Works, in relation to the prohibition of oil-tank passing through the Greek territory.

Mapping of the grassland areas that the plant 'Posidonia' grows around Lagana bay (1993).

Activities - Results:

Action taken against the experimental cultivations of genetically modified products in Greece. Result: The procedure

regarding the granting of licence to cultivate these crops was 'frozen'.

Provision of information to consumers and trading companies in relation to the dangers stemming from the

consumption of genetically modified products and collection of 70000 signatures. Result: The Association of Greek

Super Markets asked from product providers to stop providing them with genetically modified products.

Action taken against activities related to the electricity sector (thermal plants) especially in Keratsini area and Crete.

Activities - Results:

Promotion of low energy consumption lamps. Public information campaign. Result: Initiation of pilot promotional

programmes in Crete - Aegean - Thrace (1996/1997).

Activities - Results:

Launching of a campaign in favour of the abolition of agricultural pesticides that have a negative impact in oxon layer

(1992) / Presentation for the first time of a refregarator that does not use CFC (1993).

Action taken against the chemical industry SING in Norhtern Greece in order to stop CFC production (1994) Result: A

governmental decision was issued regarding the discotinuation of CFC production by SING.

Disclosure of CFC illgal trade in Greece. The police and judicial authorities refused co-operation in the aresting and

sentencing the guilty individuals (1995).

Activities - Results:

Action taken against the setting of a war material exhi ition ("DEFENTORY") in Pereas (1994) / Disclosure of the

existence of a nuclear arsenal in Araxos (1995).

Launching of a campaign against nuclear tests in France and China. Carrying out of 6 action within two months and

210.000 signatures were collected (1994-1996).

Launching of a campaign in favour of the closure of Cozlodui nuclear plant. Result: A convention was signed by the

United Nations in relation to the prohibition of nuclear tests.

Launching of a campaign against plants regarding the construciton of a nuclear plant in Turkey's coasts in

collaboration with the Mediterranean unit of Greenpeace.

Activities - Results:

Prevention of the sitting of household and industrial waste incineration plant in Schimatari of Viotia in collaboration

with the Citizens Initiative Group (1991).

Prevention of the sitting of household and industrial waste incineration plant in Schimatari of Viotia in collaboration

with the local ecoligical group and the local authorities of Komotini (1992).

Action taken against the grounding of a ship that transported CFCs in Thessalonica (1992).

Lobbying against toxic waste trading (1994).

Collaboration with the National Water Supply Company in relation to the suspension of the use of amiantos and PVC

pipes. Result: demand for amiantos pipes have since been drastically reduced / Publicaiton of a Green Consumption

Exertion of pressure for the elimination of chloride waste dumping into the environment

Action taken in favour of the elimination of chloride plastic PVC - Drawing attention to health issues (1998).

Activities - Results:

Drafting of a report under the title 'Pesticides: the situation in Greece'. / Intervention made in order that air spraying

is stoppes (1995) / Drafting of a report entitled 'Agricultural policy and finacial aid' (1996).

Promotion of an organic product market. Creation of a permanent exhibition area (public market) in Athens, in

collaboration with Athens municipality. Result: the air spraying activities stopped.

Activities - Results:

Collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment in relation to recycling and packaging issues. Collaboration with

Athens municipality for the reduction of refuse waste volume / Launching an informational campaign through the

media and the press with the purpose of undertaking initiatives at a consumer's level.

Activities - Results:

Action taken against the Public Electicity Company due to its withdrawal from ceratin prigrammes (Maramari, Sitia,

aeolic parks) / Organisation of an exhibition under the title 'Energy : the big turn'. Result: the largest photovoltaic

panel station in the world willl be installed in Crete and a network of 50 solar schools around the country will be

Crete programme: we say no to the petrol station, development of the first large installation of solar energy

production from photovoltaic panels in combination with a hydraulic storage system.

Programme under the title 'Application of solar enrgy in hotels' in co-operation with the Hoteliers Association and the

Association of Solar Energy Systems Producers (Crete).

Development of incentives for the promotion of demand in alternative sources of energy and especially in solar

Activities - Results:

Monitoring the activities in Ionion Sea of the Italian fishing fleet which uses drift-nets (1993) / Action taken involving

the ship MOBY DICK in Ionion against the Italian fishermen (1994).

Action taken in Ionion Sea involving the ship GREENPEACE, confiscation of 2,5 Kms of nets belonging to the Italian

Result: During the end of 1997, the Italian government announced the prohibition of the use of drift-nets. All action

were undertaken in collaboration with GREENPEACE's Italian, Spanish and the Mediterranean Bureaus.

Issue-Topic: Promosion of public transport - Car-free cities

Activities - Results:

Intervention made in favour of tram in Athens. Opposition expresed through various activities and events to the

Thessalonica tram, in co-operation with local agencies.

Launching of an informational campaign in favout of the reduction of car-use in urban centres. Rsult: the campaingn

partly contributed to the pedestrianisation of the historical centre of Athens.
