The Organisation is Association - Union since 1982

Aims

Encouraging and promoting the voluntarily contribution of all the authorities and parties of the merchant marine in

the continuous struggle for marine environment protection from any pollution coming or caused by ships

Members and Friends

Material Substructure

Office: Rented, Operating days: Daily, Operating hours: 8.30-16.30

The organisation has access to personal computer and it is mainly uses it for Accounts/ Mail/Statistic Data/

There are databases in Paper its morph and structure is Thematic (there is an electronic file)

Activities Hall: 100-200 individuals (provided by marine companies)

Performance material: Slide Projector (A/M and T/M), videotapes,TV, slidescope, video, commercial cassettes,

flags to senstitize the public.

For the organisation are working with fee: 14 persons.

II. Activities

General Issue: Ecosystems protection

Issue-Topic: Elaboration of a two-year programme which falls within the scope of the LIFE programme

Activities - Results:

Selection of 68 underdeveloped and remote coasts for the carrying out of local informational presentations, mobile

environmental exhibitions, construction and distribution of 68 special posters and voluntary coast cleansing

Furthermore micro-biological analysis of bathing water, recording and study of the condition of rubbish dumps,

provision of informational material, production and forwarding of educational videotapes and the promotion of

aluminium recycling, took place

Formation of HELMEPA: Organisation of a series of courses for pupils (8-15 years old) in 10 geographical areas, who

undertake 12 activities on an annual basis

Annual selection of the members of a Council of representatives from the teams that carry out the 12 activities. The

Council meets in Athens

Carrying out for fourth consecutive years of a two day training seminar at the WORLD MARITIME UNIVERCITY (MALMO).

A new co-operation with the American Coast Guard regarding the preparedness in relation to the inspection by the

Harbour Police, was legislated.

Continuation for a 14th year of the voluntary summer campaign

Selection of an advertising message and creation of a poster

Participation as a coordinator, in the international day of voluntary beach cleansing. In 1995, around 1,277

volunteers participated who reported around 5 tonnes of litter on 35 kms of coastline

Altering the permanent exhibition of Piraeus in a new electronic form which appeals not only to students but also to

young people and college students (opening on June’98)
