Legal Status

Today the Organisation is Association - Union since 1978

Initially the Organisation was Civic non Profit Organisation since 1972

Aims

1)Protection of architectural heritage 2) Strengthening the natural environment protection 3) campaign for the

sensitization of the public and of the principles 4) environmental education 5) international activities 6) submission

of proposals and monitoring the environmental policy, whenever you have to deal with illegal activities you turn

into justice 7) campaign for informing the public, the young people, children, special teams 8)exhibitions 9)

publications and journalism 10) scientific meetings 11) programmes of reconstructions and management plans 12)

Initiatives in collaboration with other agencies for the protection of the historical physiognomy of Thessalonica and

the appropriate use of its monuments

Organisation of speeches, meetings, exhibitions such as the A' scientific meeting organised by the Aristelion

University of Thessalonica entitled 'The restoration works of the historical buildings in N. Greece'.

Organisational support of the exhibition entitled 'Secular Medieval Architecture 1300-1500 and its Preservation' which

is an important endeavour for the introduction of an inter-Balkan co-operation in the field of the history of Architecture

providing scholarships

Elaboration and implementation of restoration works in Chios monastery, St. Loukas monastery, Firogion monastery

Operation for six years of an architectural consultancy office in Cyclades.

Elaboration and putting forward of proposals in relation to the legislation regarding the traditional settlements

Publication of an award winning album, books e.t.c.

Organisation of a mobile award winning book exhibitions (1978-1994).

In the framework of the long standing promotion of the protection of Plaka area, our organisation successfully

restored the neoclassical building that currently houses the Centre for the Environmental and Cultural Inheritance

and the MIO/ECSDE. In 1992, EUROPA NOSTRA awards the completion of this project.

fires and the development of a national strategy for nature

Implementation of the programme entitled '1,000 communities for Europe's environment' with the view to introducing

of an environmental policy at a local government level

Since 1991, the organisation participates with the Athens University in the implementation of programmes regarding

Amvrakikos and Mitrikou lake wetlands

in collaboration with eight environmental groups, environmental NGOs and Universities, the organisation undertook in

1991, the coordination of the programme for the protection of Mediterranean sea seals, the responsibility for the

implementation the first measures included in the management plan for the Alonisos and N. Sporades sea park, as

well as for the operation of the waste treatment unit in the park. Also, the Greek division of the Documentation

Centre for the Mediterranean seal in collaboration with the Belgian Royal Institute of Natural Sciences (IRSCNB) is in

Activities - Results:

Carrying out of a survey on possible ways to implement the relevant environmental legislation in Greece

Public events, lectures, screening of movies, exhibitions, seminars, debates, interviews for the prevention of

environmental damaging project constructions

The EU and the NATIONAL TRUST OF GREECE, is financing the undertaking of postgraduate degrees abroad on issues

relating to restoration issues.

The organisation produced and distributed to 4,000 schools a still pictures movie about the environment.

in collaboration with relevant Ministries, a series of environmental education programmes were undertaken.

The organisation implemented a model programme regarding Prespes at the Florina prefecture schools. It organises

educational-ecological summer camps. It staffs an environmental education team which incorporates a lot of

educationalists. Educational visits of pupils to monuments and biotopes took place. Sensitisation and participation

initiatives regarding paper and aluminium recycling were also carried out by pupils.
