Initially the Organisation was Civic non Profit Organisation since 1993

Aims

Direct and indirect contribution in the protection of marine, land and air environment of the Mediterranean region,

of wild flora and fauna of biotopes, national parks and coasts

Activities Hall: 100 individuals (8 persons can be accommodated in the guest house of Tripodon street)

II. Activities

General Issue: Establishment of a Mediterranean network of NGOs

Issue-Topic: Expression of common opinions at the international inter-governmental meetings

Activities - Results:

Recording of foreign and Greek Mediterranean organisations of national character, safeguarding of the first

communication network of the registered organisations, organisation of a library

Publication of the 'Guide for the establishment and operation of an NGO' (Activity kit) and its distribution to around

500 members of the network and to every interested party.

Organisation of an international convention organised by NGOs on the environment, Sustainable Development and a

safe Mediterranean (Athens, 21-24.11.91) / close co-operation with the UNEP-MEDITERRANEAN ACTION PLAN

Publication of a newsletter regarding the activities of the network, the new Mediterranean policy, the NGOs' profile

and information about the conventions

Activities - Results:

Information and briefing of newly established NGOs for the activities of MIO. A successful attempt for the

development of the existing network of NGOs was undertaken.

Publication of a monthly informational leaflet that is forwarded to all the NGO members and refers to the activities of

the Secretary and the Members with the view to sound and mutual exchange of information.

The activity took place in 1995 Range: International

Activities - Results:

Co-organisation with UNESCO-UNEP of an inter-regional seminar for the re-determination of the environmental

education with the parallel incorporation of the concept of Sustainable Development.

Formation of four working teams within the scope of the seminar's activities - participation of 20 expert scientists,

four of whom submitted a detailed report on each region of the world.

Pilot application of the theories developed at the seminar to a local high school (Lavrio)

Organisation of an environmental education programme display with an encouraging Greek participation.

Activities - Results:

Our organisation co-ordinates the working group with the title 'Information, sensitisation, environmental education

and participation'. This group is part of the Mediterranean committee for the Sustainable Development M.C.S.D

(United Nations Environment Programme- UNEP for Mediterranean)

MIO has undertaken Secretariat responsibilities of the convention organised by UNESCO and the Greek government

(8-12/12).The convention is entitled 'Environment and Society: Education and Citizen's Sensitisation for Sustainable

Within the scope of the aforementioned convention, a convention of Mediterranean NGOs id also organised. The

latter has two discussion themes: a) 'Environmental Education' and b) 'Religions, Principles and the Environment' (6-

Activities - Results:

Pan-Mediterranean campaign organised by NGOs, for the sensitisation of the public.

Organisation of a convention in Athens for the management of Mediterranean water resources (17-19.3.94) -

Opening of a campaign regarding the Mediterranean year of water - determination of the action axles that fed into

the round table discussions that took place in each country.

Commencement of a new phase of the MIO/ECSDE which included its conversion from a NGOs' network to a

Federation of Mediterranean NGOs consisting of 51 organisations.

Organisation of a congress in Cairo (26-27.4.92) on the Euro-Mediterranean co-operation of NGOs resulted in the

publication of the 'Cairo NGO Memorandum', a document of principles for the appropriate use of natural resources,

the conditions for a Sustainable Development, issues of geo-politic e.t.c.)

Organisation of a congress in Rome (24-27.10.92) on the problems of freshwaters and its management in the

Mediterranean basin.

Organisation of press seminars for the training of NGOs' members regarding organisational and funding issues.

Within the scope of these activities, a number of seminars, lectures visits to national parks and wetlands, and trips

abroad were undertaken (1.2.93-31.7.96)

Participation in the European research programme entitled (SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF EUROPEAN CITIES AND

REGIONS-SUDECIR) with the view to developing a methodology and the planning of sustainable development of

European regions. MIO focuses on the planning of a Sustainable tourist development .(6/96-11/97). It also actively

participated in the various thematic working teams of M.C.S.D. e.g. Sustainable tourism, water recourses
