Aims

Conservation and protection of the natural environment of Olympus / sensitization of the public on subjects of life

quality / protection of the natural environment from tourism interventions / conservation of the natural

environment, of flora and fauna and generally of the ecological balance of our country/ activities made to promote

popular architecture, art and music and generally tradition.

General Issue: Consumer protection - Quality of life

Issue-Topic: Water supply of Katerini city - Quality of drinking water

The activity took place in 1997 Range: Prefectural

Activities - Results:

The new water supply project which supplies water to Katerini town from Olympus springs has negative

consequences on the quality of drinking water (concentration of dangerous substances such as pesticide residuals,

fertilisers, organic matter, waste) close to the pumping areas. It was also noted that the water supply network of the

Publications - Announcements to the local press in relation to the decrease of water resources from various causes

(over-pumping, pollution of underground water), submission of proposals to the prefectural government of Pieria,

management of underground water of Pieria.

Organisation of a meeting about organic farming entitled 'Vision and reality regarding the development of organic

farming in Pieria Prefecture.

those developed an environmentally friendly action.

Constant battle involving announcements, lodging complaints to the competent authorities and the media with the

purpose of restricting excessive sand-grabbing activities, in the name of 'development'.

Disclosure of the operation of a illegal moto-cross racing-ground at the Aliakmonas delta (Eginio) and freezing its

operation - Lodging of an appeal to the State Council

Constant attempts made to eliminate hunting in Aliakmonas estuary.

Recommendations were expressed during various seminars and meetings with the participation of local authority

agencies, in relation to the development of a mild-type of tourism in Olympus and Pieria mountains.

Successful action taken to avert the implementation of investors' plans to construct a Disneyland type theme park

(Reconstruction of an Ancient city) and relevant infrastructure such as ski lift, hotels, ski resorts in Olympus.

Successful action taken against the selling of 50,000 acres of forest land from Mitsotakis governement to a

businessman (Skoulidis)

Production and distribution of videotapes with environmental theme to schools and agencies, focusing on Olympus

flora and fauna. Constant battle against the construction of a ski resort by the Prefecture in Vrisoules.

Attempts made through lodging appeals to the State Council, to cancel the opening-up of new roads in Olympus
