Conservation of the cultural heritage / sensitize inform and active the public on environmental issues / to conduct

or assign researches for the proper use of natural resources / opposing to the use of nuclear energy and

The organisation has access to personal computer and it is mainly uses it for Contacting with other organizations

Remarks: The Council is consisting of 15 members, elected every two years, (There are 3 groups of 5 members. Every

eight months one group is succeeding the other and each group is occupied with a specific subject)

II. Activities

General Issue: Conservation of the natural environment

Issue-Topic: Samothraki

Activities - Results:

Co-operation with the local ecological group and the municipality for the conservation of the natural characteristics

and the unique cultural character of Samothraki.

Mobilisation against the sitting of an electricity generating factory (successful outcome).

Launching a campaign, in collaboration with the network of environmental organisations of Northern Greece, in

favour of the declaration of Saos in Samothraki as a protection area (national park )

Sensitisation of the public and pupils through taking excursion trips.

Co-operation with the Forest Department for the ecological exploitation of forests.

Participation in reforestation projects organised by the Forest Department along the borders with Bulgaria.

Activities - Results:

Lobbing efforts towards the municipality and the Ministry of Agriculture with the parallel utilisation of national and

international studies with the purpose of protecting Dadia ecosystem. The attempts resulted in the establishment of

a municipal protection agency.

Submission of proposals to the Evros delta management forum concerning the determination of certain land-uses for

eco-tourist development

The proposals included the restriction of agricultural, stock raising and fishing activities.

Systematic monitoring and surveying of Evros delta. Political intervention and litigation battles with the purpose of

implementing RAMSAR convention.

Organisation of a three-nation meeting about Evros, with the participation of Alexandroupoli lyceum and the

equivalent institutions in Turkey and Bulgaria. The teachers represented ecological organisations in their respective

sensitisation of the public.

Implementation of a pilot recycling programme targeting at informing and sensitising the public through the media.

Collection of paper, glass, aluminium from a neighbourhood for 8 months and study of the experience gained.

Continuation of paper collection scheme by the municipality. Storage of paper collected in OSE's rail wagons and

disposal at DIANA paper producing company. The municipality intents to further organise and extent the programme

Every two months, there is an institutionalized meeting of the North-Eastern Hellenic environmental organizations

that aims to co-ordinate actions taken on local issues and those of general interest.
