Carrying out of tree planting activities in municipality areas in co-operation wit the brotherhood and the municipality

of Vrontismeni.

Activities - Results:

Representation made to the police in relation to the illegal fishing of salmon and karavida fish. Since 1993, the

representations are made in collaboration with the local municipal council of Kalamas area. The net result is that the

illegal fishing activities have been considerably reduced.

Enrichment of Kalamas river with Karavida fish spawn by members of our organisation (1990-91).

Enrichment of Kalamas river with salmon spawn by members of our organisation (1990-92).

Configuration of a public recreation area at Kalamas (construction of a kiosk and benches) and undertaking of a tree-

planning scheme along the river (800 metres).

Activities - Results:

Interventions made to the police and litigation against the pigsty that polluted the river with its waste. A verdict of

guilt was issues incorporating a two year suspension fine. The monitoring of the pigsty is ongoing.

Interventions made in relation to the discharge of waste from abattoirs in the river. The abattoirs were removed from

the area in 1995 (3/94-95).

Information of the residents-farmers of the area on the distractive impact on Karavida fish population (reduction of

10-15%), stemming from the use of pesticides during corn cultivation

A toxicological examination was carried out at the Ioannina veterinary clinic. The use of pesticides is still common in

the area; their direct discharge into the river however was terminated.
