Interventions made to the Port authority for the effective coastal management (prohibitions - sand-grabbing, clearing

of coasts with mechanical means, motorcycle/car racing).

Activities - Results:

Action taken in collaboration with the local authorities against the extension of AHS Linoperasmata.

Participation in various events such as seminars, conferences, debates for tackling the energy problem in Crete

Interventions made to the Prefecture for saving energy and its rational use. Our stands are: 1) We say NO to nuclear

power 2) We say YES to the rational use of energy (that is decrease in energy demand) 3) We say NO to energy

wasting 4) We say YES to the use of renewable sources of energy

5) regional decentralisation of production (reduction in transportation costs) 6) regional power sharing. An attempt is

made to reach commonly accepted stands shared by all environmental NGOs of Crete.

Co-operation with the competent officers of the Department of Agriculture with the purpose of biologically combating

crop diseases.

Arguing with DEIAI about the fact that it directs the biologically filtered water used in the clinic into the a river.

Litigation for the irresponsibility showed by the competent authorities during the Giofiri flood

Action taken with the view of conducting a research project for the investigation of the causes of pollution of Almiros

river. It was found recently that the river is polluted by the waste discharged by nearby hotels.

Lodging of complaints to the public prosecutor of Heracleon for the banking up of rivers / Public information campaign

and interventions made to the relevant agencies regarding the management of water courses.

Offering oranges, that were destined for dumping, to local schools, in collaboration with the Secretary General for

Agriculture and school authorities.

Representations made to the prefect and the prime minister in relation to the issue of homeless people who have

found shelter around the fringe of the old town (the issue is pending).

concerts outside Alikarnassos prisons with the purpose of ameliorating living conditions in prison.

Participation in Committees for the selection of areas suitable for sanitary landfilling of oil-mill waste. Finally, open

tanks was selected as the optimum solution.

Information-mobilization of citizens of Alikarnassos following various interventions made. in collaboration with the

municipality, ETVA and DEYAI, cesspool waste is managed appropriately and the relevant sanitary regulations are

Activities - Results:

Implementation of a pilot recycling programme (glass, paper, plastic, metal) in Heracleon with the co-operation of 40

agencies. The participation of the public is satisfactory; problems appeared with the recycling of the waste collected

and with the management body.

Occupation of a rubbish dump in Skafidara (N. Heracleon) in collaboration with Gazi community and a football team

(OFI). This action resulted in the relocation of the rubbish dump.

Storage of paper for recycling in collaboration with ChEN and disposal of profits to the Fund for the battle against

VI. Relations with others ENGO

Collaboration between 7 environmental organizations in Crete have led to the creation of the “Pan-Cretan Co-

ordinative Secretariat” (1 regular and 1 replacement member of each organization) that aims in informing each

other – take action in common.
