Aims

Attempt to prevent the pollution and contamination from spreading/ preserving natural environment- preserving

the balance of the ecosystems in the perfecture of Irakleion./ preserving the monuments and the cultural heritage.

Repairing the damages caused to the environment- ensuring the healthy living of the citizens.

General Issue: Conservation of the cultural heritage

Issue-Topic: Venetian walls of Heracleon

Activities - Results:

Interventions made to Heracleon municipality against the construction-extension of a sporting ground at a place that

is nearby the Venetian city-walls of Heracleon (positive results).

Provision of assistance to the Venetian city-wall preservation and restoration works undertaken by the Byzantine

Monuments Department.

Organisation of a photographic-comics exhibition revolving around environmental issues in collaboration with primary

and secondary education schools and presentation of the kids' work at Agios Marcos Basilica.

Activities - Results:

Interventions made to the prefecture, publications in the press and production of radio programmes with the purpose

of forcing the implementation of operation standards for two liqueur producing factories that polluted the water of

the area through waste discharging.

Complaints were lodged to the prefecture against the operation of a specific factory which caused water pollution by

discharging waste into a river during the night (successful outcome).

Complaints were lodged to the prefecture and radio programmes were produced against the pollution of Apolelepi

and Geropotamos rivers from oil-mills waste.

Implementation of a pilot recycling programme (glass, paper, plastic, metal) in Heracleon with the co-operation of 40

The participation of the public is satisfactory; problems appeared with the recycling of the waste collected and with

the management body.

Planning joint activities in collaboration with many institutes of the city and being able to elaborate common propositions
