II. Activities

General Issue: Environmental protection

Issue-Topic: Development projects

From: 1994 To: 1998 Range: Prefectural

Activities - Results:

Submission of proposals to the municipality and the prefecture against the extension of the Sitia airport and the road

connection of the two ports.

Raising an objection to the prefecture against the Environmental Impact Statement (discussed but rejected).

Actions taken for the promotion of Sustainable Development.

Activities - Results:

Action taken (such as the provision of information to the inhabitants of nearby communes and carrying out an opinion

poll) against the sitting-operation of the Public Electricity Company's factory at Atherinolakos area.

Organisation of a series of demonstrations with the participation-information of local agencies and representatives of

the Public Electricity Company.

Despite that consequent interventions were made to public authorities, political parties, the European Union, the

Public Electricity Company recently bought the necessary land for the construction of the project.

Participation in a meeting organised by the prefecture of Crete in Ziros. The subject of the meeting was the issue of

energy, and our organisation (along with Greenpeace) suggested that the use of mild type of energy can satisfy the

Activities - Results:

Organisation of a music concert with the purpose of financing the activities of our organisation, in co-ordination with

the Koutspuras Reforestation Co-ordinating Committee and the Sitia municipality.

Carrying out of a reforestation scheme at Koutsouras with the participation of scouts and high-schools students. The

trees (1000 saplings) were provided by the Ministry of Agriculture.

Activities - Results:

Production of radio programmes with the purpose of informing the public about the sea pollution caused from the

waste discharged by oil mills.

Participation to the convention organised by the Development Organisation of Sitia. The overriding subject of the

convention was about oil-mill waste.

Organisation of a concert with the purpose of collecting signatures, incorporated in a protest document published in

the Greek newspaper Eleftherotipia. The public prosecutor forced the polluters/companies to construct the necessary

Actions taken (such as the distribution of brochures and participation in lectures) against the implementation of the

programme for the management of Dionidiades which is a nesting place for FALCO ELEONORA and Aegean gull,

resting ground for migratory birds, and a place with unique endemic flora

Publication and distribution of brochures and participation in debates for the restriction of business activity and the

clarification of land-uses. Our organisation recommends the establishment of a unified management agency for the

Cleaning of beaches from litter on an annual basis in collaboration with the Port Authority, scouts and volunteers

(usually in September.

Activities - Results:

Provision of medicare to injured animal and co-operation with the Department of Biology of the University of Crete.

Where necessary, the injured animals are transported to EKPAZP.

Collection (through the placement of special bins) and storage of batteries at schools in collaboration with the

municipality. At the end of the school year, events and award giving ceremonies were held.

Elaboration, in collaboration with the municipality, of a pilot recycling programme. The programme included the

collection of paper, glass and aluminium and the composting of organic waste of every household.

ordinative Secretariat” (1 regular and 1 replacement member of each organization) that aims in informing each
