General Issue: Conservation of cultural heritage

Activities - Results:

Utilisation of the results-proposal of a study entitled 'Kampos regeneration' in order to conserve the character of the

area (Kampos area has already been declared historical- traditional settlement).

in collaboration with the Ecology Society and other Societies and through contact-making with competent authorities,

the utilisation of the study's outcome was possible.

Participation with other agencies in the clearing of beaches from litter and in the campaign-speeches on water issues.

Pressures exercised by the Ministry of Culture to the airport extension through KAS. The recommendation made to

the State Council and KAS meeting is pending).

Activities - Results:

A' Phase: The following activities took place with the co-operation of Ecological Societies, political parties and

politicians: 1) Information of central and local government agencies, 2) In formation of labour and cultural agencies on

the island, 3) Sensitisation of citizens through public gatherings, 4) dynamic protests, marches, 5) constant

publications to the local press, radio programmes, 6) legal support provision to citizens-members of the organisation.

Activities - Results:

B' phase: Lodging an appeal to the State Council. The Greek European Parliament MPs and the EU Commission's

Appeals Committee has also been informed (positive result but time-consuming procedures).

Classification, justification and document/study/publication relating to the airport extension / Four supporting

decisions were taken by the municipal council against the airport's extension.

A cancelling decision was issued by the State Council / C' Phase: 'Tackling the lack of Environmental Impact

Statements. The administration instituted a procedure for the going-ahead of the airport's extension.

Activities - Results:

C' Phase: A Committee was set-up (August 1996) to fight against the new extension plans. The Committee members

included the Ecology Society, and left wing political parties (Synaspismos, Greek Communist Party). The action was

intensified with the symbolic occupation of the Town Hall and the Chamber, the welcoming of the prime minister's visit

with posters, meeting of the municipal council, and contacts with Greek and European Parliament MPs.

on issues regarding the airport, while the Farkaina-Kontari Association is the main institution used for the

Two press conferences were organized for Athenian newspapers in collaboration with the Environmental and

Ecological Association of Chios .
