Legal Status

The Organisation is Association - Union since 1989

Aims

To protect the ecological balance and the space aesthetics’, to support individual and common activities towards

the above direction and to compare in a critical way anything which comes in conflict with it/To study and research

General Issue: Conservation of cultural heritage

Issue-Topic: Beaches

Activities - Results:

Dynamic opposition against the distraction of beaches from the massive tourism model (i.e. construction of large

hotels the operation of which pollute the environment). An indicative negative example in that respect is the tourist

'exploitation' of Karfas bay.

Interventions made in collaboration with other agencies and municipal services in order to prevent the construction of

a hotel at Emporio area which has been declared an archaeological site (1990, positive result).

Interventions made to the competent authorities, production of radio and T.V. programmes, publications to the press

and public gathering in order to protest against the illegal operation of hotels (biological waste treatment e.t.c.)

Interventions made in cases of illegal building construction at beaches, by citizens and state agencies.

Setting up of fire-preventing groups in collaboration with the Forest Service 1990-91).

activities when necessary (1989-96).

Transportation of injured animals and birds to the nursing centres of Aegina and Paros. Release to the wild of four

birds in collaboration with EKPAZP.

Activities - Results:

Lodging an appeal to the State Council and interventions made against the aversion of Kantila's torrent into a road

and against the building activities around the torrent area which is of unique significance ecosystem.

The result was that the State Council issued a decision against the continuation of the building activities until a final

decision is issued. Announcements made to the local press and expressing our opposition to the local authorities

concerning the dumping of Agia Irini Kofina torrent and the diversion of Armenis river.

the local press were made in relation to the sitting of projects in the island.

Interventions made to the competent authorities so that the distraction-disturbance caused to Kampos area by the

illegal sitting and construction of the airport, do not extend as far as the rest of Kampos area and Chios city.

Organisation of a three-day conference of Mediterranean countries for the protection of the environment, the flora

and fauna (1992).

Organisation of a Green Youth congress with the participation of young people form the EU and the Mediterranean

Attempts were made to promote the unique crop varieties of the island. Publications to the local press and

participation in the submission of proposal for LEADER I and II programmes concerning the traditional local crops.

Paper collection from households, public services and schools, selection, transportation and putting the material on

the market in Athens.

Attempts were made to co-operate with the municipality in relation to the recycling of paper, glass, aluminium.
