Aims

Elaboration of Environmental studies - environmental protection in the region of Eordaias / promoting ecological

awareness / taking part in and organizing activities for natural resources management on local and ultra local level

/ opposing to nuclear energy / promoting alternative sources of energy.

II. Activities

General Issue: Environmental management

Issue-Topic: Sanitary landfilling at the Public Electricity Company's mines.

From: 1996 To: 1998 Range: Prefectural

Activities - Results:

Organisation of an informational event revolving around waste management, recycling, waste collection issues, and

making a dynamic contribution to the making an environmental and technical-economic study for the construction of a

sanitary landfilling at the mines. Presentation of the issue through the local media, through publication of articles to

the local newspapers, the publication of an informational newsletter and leaflets.

Lodging protests and undertaking various other interventions to the municipality against the inappropriate way that

the municipality dealt with the issue of the construction of a sanitary landfilling ground at the mining grounds.

The local pupils were informed about the different types of waste and their management.

Activities - Results:

Co-organisation of a seminar entitled 'Environment and Health' / Production of film entitled 'The city with the

chimneys' which was screened in local schools.

Organisation of a gathering-protest in favour of financing anti-pollution measures for the area. The managing agency

was proposed to be the municipality.

Co-organisation with Maragopoulos institution of a meeting entitled 'Ptolemaida: a severe environmental pollution

source' in the municipal council offices in Athens.

Lodging protests and undertaking various other interventions to the Public Electricity Company, the municipality and

the prefecture against the way that they have been developing the area, throughout all stages of the production

Activities - Results:

Entering protests and undertaking various other interventions against a) the use of dynamites for mining purposes

resulting in causing crevices in the walls of nearby villages b) the inappropriate use if filters throughout the burning

procedure, and c) the transportation and placing of cinders without taking any precautionary measures.

The Public Electricity Company, despite the improvements made in relation to the installation of filters and the

transportation and placing of cinders issues, has not yet installed any smoke emission gauge at the end of the

Litigation against ash emission from the Public Electricity Company factory's chimneys

Issue-Topic: Farm clearing

Activities - Results:

Launching of a campaign against farm clearing through burning the remaining matter. The campaign included an

informational event in the municipal council offices.

Distribution of leaflets to farmers and production of informational radio programmes through the local media

regarding the same issue

Elaboration of a series of medical studies at Eordea region in collaboration with Aristotelion University Hospital aiming

at researching the health impacts stemming from air pollution.

General Issue: Environmental education

Issue - Topic: Two days meeting of informing educators on environmental education issues

The action has been programmed for the year 1998 Range Local

Future Activities:

Organizing a two days meeting for informing the educators in the region of Eordaias on issues of environmental education

from a unit of the Aristotelian University. Educator’s of the region are going to participate in the meeting with the

subsidy of the Greek labor unit of the Public Power Coorporation by the name: “Spartakos” and of the ELME (Educators of

Second Grade education)

Issue - Topic: Demonstrations of cultural content

The action has been programmed for the year 1998 Range Local

Future Activities:

Organizing a series of events on the topic of cultural tradition and connection of the region through the representation of

the associations and the cultural traditions of the region, presenting exhibits on cultural issues and photographs,

historical continuance of cultural trends and traditions of the city and presentation of music and dancing groups of the

region.

Demonstration – speech of the former dean from the University of Crete Mr. Grammatikaki and music event with the

Issue - Topic: Propositions for the management of the developing source (which is a subsidy given to the region as

returned money from the Public Power Organization)

The action has been programmed for the year 1998 Range Perfectural

Future Activities:

Presentation of the already existing condition of the region (registration of the problems) and propositions on the ways

the developing source is possible to be exploited by regional institutions in infrastructure and upgrading works.

Presentation of specific problems together with the respective construction studies and economic and technical studies

with the collaboration of the region Institutes (mechanicals association, trade association, etc)

Presentation of these propositions in the municipal and prefecture council is made at the same time in the region in order

for respective activities to be taken over.

Issue - Topic: Registration and presentation of the morphology of the landscape of the region

The action has been programmed for the year 1999 Range Perfectural

Future Activities:

In collaboration with the Aegean university – section of Environment, presentation of air photographs of the region at the

same time with pictures taken from satellite, in order the morphology of the region, the extension of DEI’s (Public Power

Corporation) mining, and the threat that the above represent to the citizens of the region to be determined (with the help

of the picture).

In collaboration with IGME there will be a presentation of the water table of the region, the changes occurring from the

function of DEI’S(Public Power Corporation) units and the threats that this fact represents
