Dimitris Emmanuel (born 1949) has studied Architecture and Planning in NTU, Athens and has done postgraduate work in Urban Geography and Planning in LSE where he received a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. He has mainly worked in social and economic research and on planning and policy studies in the field of housing and urban development on which he has published extensively. He has been Head of the Research and Housing Policy Studies Unit in DEPOS, the Greek Public Corporation for Housing and Urban Planning (1979-2003). During that period he was responsible for a large number of research projects on urban conditions and housing and their relationship to social stratification and inequities in public assitance and has often acted as a policy advisor to the Greek government and international (EU, UN, OECD) housing and urban policy committees. Since 2004 is a Research Director in the Institute for Urban and Rural Sociology, the Greek National Centre for Social Research.
