A new report by the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) presents results from the world’s biggest-ever survey on violence against women, revealing the extent of abuse suffered by women at home, work, in public and online. As well as demonstrating the wide prevalence of violence against adult women, the report also details incidents of physical and sexual violence experienced by women in childhood.

Council of Europe: Opening of the judicial year of the European Court of Human Rights

The judicial year of the European Court of Human Rights will be opened on 31 January. Around 260 eminent figures from the European judicial scene will attend a seminar organised for the occasion. The seminar will take place in the afternoon, at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, from 2.15 pm, and will be followed at 6.15 pm by the official opening ceremony, in the course of which Mr Dean Spielmann, President of the Court, and Mr Andreas Voßkuhle, President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, will address a 320-strong audience representing the judicial world and local and national authorities.

The theme of the seminar is the “Implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights: a shared judicial responsibility?”.

It will be opened by Mr Dean Spielmann, with an introduction by Ms Julia Laffranque, judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of Estonia. Mr Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade, judge of the International Court of Justice, Mr Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of Greece, Alec Stone Sweet, Professor at Yale Law School, and Mark Villiger, Section President of the European Court of Human Rights, will address the seminar.

Equality: EU rules to tackle discrimination now in place in all 28 EU Member States

European Union rules to tackle discrimination on grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religious belief, disability, age and sexual orientation have now been implemented by all Member States in national law. Now, further efforts are needed to apply them in practice. These are the key findings of a new report released by the European Commission today.
