THE 12TH ROUND OF THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL SURVEY HAS BEGUN

The 12th round of the ‘European Social Survey’ (ESS) will take place in Greece from 4 September to 30 November 2026. The survey is organised by the European Social Survey Research Infrastructure (ESS-ERIC) and aims to ensure that the voices of Europe’s citizens are heard by those who make decisions on issues affecting its immediate and long-term future. Conducted every two years, it is the most significant social survey carried out at European level and records the political and social views of residents in each participating country on a comparative basis. Greece’s participation in the 12th round of the survey is funded by the Ministry of Development’s National Development Programme 2021–2025. The NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SOCIAL RESEARCH (EKKE), which is overseen by the General Secretariat for Research and Innovation of the Ministry of Development, has once again assumed scientific responsibility for and is carrying out the survey. The fieldwork is being carried out by Kapa Research. This collaboration helps to meet the demanding specifications of the survey, which were designed, over a number of years, by European political scientists, sociologists and statisticians, on behalf of the European Union’s central scientific body, the European Science Foundation. Thirty-two European countries are taking part in the 12th consecutive round, and residents in Greece will have the opportunity to express their views on a range of crucial issues such as the use of the media, trust in society and politics, the effectiveness of governance, subjective well-being, social exclusion, religion, perceptions of discrimination, and more.

The survey comprises more than 2,500 STRICTLY ANONYMOUS INTERVIEWS across the country, in households selected through RANDOM SAMPLING. Each member of a household selected to take part will be one of the 2,500 residents of Greece who will represent the country’s population in this survey. The individuals selected across the country cannot be replaced by others. For the first time in the ESS, households are being given the opportunity to complete certain questionnaires in paper or electronic form themselves, without the presence of an interviewer.

Officials from the National Centre for Social Research emphasise the importance of the survey for the representation of Greece and call on those selected to take part by answering the questions put to them by certified researcher who will knock on their door. By each of you dedicating one hour of your valuable time, you will help our country to once again gather the 2,500 residents of Greece who will represent it in the ‘European Social Survey’.
