ELIDEK 15585 - Social Divisions and Deprivation in Athens 2011-2021

This project explores the restructuring of the social geography of Athens during the 2010s. Significant events such as the public debt crisis, migration, the increase in tourism, and the COVID-19 pandemic have left their mark on the city's structure. The project will be carried out across three main axes:

A) Analysis and Mapping of Socio-Spatial Changes in the Metropolitan area using detailed data from the 2021 Census. The aim is to analyze the dynamics that shaped the urban fabric and to understand whether Athens became more socio-spatially equal or more unequal during the 2010s.

B) Cross-sectoral Approach (including class, gender, and ethnicity) – in relation to previous analyses of segregation in Athens that mainly focused on the spatial distribution of professional categories – by considering micro-scale segregation (vertical social segregation in apartment buildings).

C) International Comparative Studies: a) Different housing systems and their resilience in Athens, Vienna, and Belgrade, and b) “Touristification” in Athens, Naples, and Lisbon.
